Research

I am interested in studying insect behaviour, with a particular emphasis on how insects interact with their natural environment. I am currently investigating how native sand wasps capture sugarbag bees mid-flight in the field.

My current research model: the Bembix wasp that ‘preys’ on the native stingless bee Tetragonula carbonaria.

From 2021 to 2023, I worked as a Research Assistant at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in partnership with National Parks Board (NParks), studying human–macaque interactions across urban and wild environments. I collected and analysed ecological, microbiome, and behavioural data to understand how human activity influences macaque health, diet, and movement. This work involved extensive field sampling, statistical analysis, and supporting project operations, including budgeting, reporting, and safety oversight.

Before that, from 2019 to 2021, I was part of the Mandai Insect Survey at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) in partnership with Mandai Wildlife Group, where I conducted long-term biodiversity monitoring in Singapore’s forests. I carried out weekly fieldwork, processed and curated insect specimens, and used Next-Generation Sequencing on over 10,000 specimens to document local insect diversity. I also trained interns and volunteers and supported the project’s logistics and reporting.

In addition to formal research roles, my volunteer work has exposed me to a wide range of ecological activities, including marine intertidal surveys, and camera trapping. I was also part of the XiniX AI team during the XPRIZE semifinals. Definitely an unforgettable experience!
